ClassroomDebates2003,DavidM.Leuser,Ph.D.PlymouthStateUniversity.Allrightsreserved.IntroductionTheclassroomdebatesareexercisesdesignedtoallowyoutostrengthenyourskillsintheareasofleadership,interpersonalinfluence,teambuilding,groupproblemsolving,andoralpresentation.Debatetopicsandpositionstatementsareoutlinedbelow.Groupsmaysignuponafirstcome,firstservedbasis,byspecifyingboththedebatetopicandthepositiondesired(i.e.,ProorCon).Notethatallgroupsmusthavesignedupforthedebatebythedatedenotedintheclassschedule.Allgroupmembersareexpectedtoparticipateintheresearch,development,andpresentationofyourdebateposition.Preparationwillrequiresubstantiallibraryresearch.Eachparticipatingmemberwillreceivethesamegroupgrade.DebateFormat6minutePositionPresentation-Pro6minutePositionPresentation-Con5minuteWorkPeriod4minuteRebuttal-Pro4minuteRebuttal-Con3minuteWorkPeriod2minuteResponse-Pro2minuteResponse-Con1minuteWorkPeriod2minutePositionSummary-ProorCon2minutePositionSummary-ProorCon5minuteTallyingofBallots/AnnouncementofWinnerDebateProcedure51 Thedebatewilltaketheformoftimedindividualand/orgrouppresentationsandresponsesseparatedbytimedgroupworkperiods.Therulesappliedmaydeviatefromtheformalrulesofdebating.Whenquestionsarise,thejudgmentoftheinstructorwillprovidethedefinitiveruling.Priortothebeginningoftheclassperiod,bothteamsaretopositiontheirdesksfacingeachotheratthefrontoftheroom.Eachteamistowriteitsteamname,debateposition,anddebatepositionstatementontheblackboardbehindtheirdesks.Notethatabsolutelynochangesmaybemadetothepositionstatementspresentedbelow.Youmustarguethemexactlyaswritten!Teammembersmayspeakeitherfromtheirdesksorfromthepodium,astheydesire.Audiovisualsmaybeusedatanytime,including,butnotlimitedto,handouts,flipcharts,transparencies,slides,audioandvideotapes,etc.Whileateamisnotrequiredtouseallofthetimeallocatedtoeachdebatecomponent,speakersmuststopimmediatelywhentheallocatedtimerunsout.Teammembersareprohibitedfromspeakingtotheaudienceoropposingteamexceptatthetimesspecificallyallocatedtothem.Thus,therecanbenoimmediate,reciprocalinterchangeofcommentsbetweentheteams.Thesequenceofthepositionsummarieswillbedeterminedbyarandomprocedureattheconclusionofthefinalworkperiod.Notethatnonewinformationmaybeintroducedduringthesummary.Doingsomayresultindisqualificationoftheoffendinggroup.Ifeitherteamfeelsthattheiropponentsareintroducingnewinformationduringthesummary,theymaychallengethemimmediatelyandrequestarulingfromtheinstructor.SelectionofWinner(s)andAllocationofPointsTheinstructorreservestherighttoallocatefewerthanthedefaultorclassvotedpointstoagroup,if,inhisopinion,thequalityofpreparationand/orpresentationwasinadequate.Debate"losers"whoprepareandpresentadequatelywillreceive30pointsfortheirefforts.Debate"Winners"willbeselectedintwoways,asfollows:AudienceVote:Classmembersintheaudiencewillvotebysecretballotforadebatewinner.Votesaretobebaseduponpresentationqualityonly,andnotuponpersonalagreementordisagreementwiththepositionespoused.Attheconclusionofeachcomponentofthedebate,classmemberswillbeaskedtoassignapointratingalongwithexplanatorycommentstoeachteamfortheirperformanceduringthatcomponent.Whenthedebateisover,thepointratingswillbesummed.Whicheverteamhasthehighersumwillbethewinneronthatballot.Afterallballotsarecollected,thenumberofvotesforeachteamwillbeannounced.Whicheverteamhasmorevoteswillbethewinner,andtheteamwillreceive10bonuspointsinadditiontothe30forbasicpreparation.Intheeventofatie,theinstructor’svotewilldecidethewinner.Instructors"Vote:Theinstructorwillalsoevaluatebothteamsaccordingtotheaboveproceduresandcriteria,andselecthischoiceforthewinner.Theteamofhischoicewillreceive10bonuspoints.Thus,dependinguponthenatureofthevotesplit,the"Winner(s)"mayreceive10or20bonuspoints,foratotalofeither40or50pointsforthedebate.51 ReviewofBallotsEachdebatingteamwillhavetheopportunitytotakehomealloftheballotsovernightforreviewandfeedbackontheirperformance.Ifnecessary,theteamtotakethemfirstwillbedeterminedbytheflipofacoin.Oncebothteamshavereviewedthem,theyaretobereturnedtotheinstructor.DebateTopicsWhoseResponsibilityisStress?PRO:Employeeswhocannottakethestressinherentinajobshouldberelievedoftheircurrentduties(i.e.,transferred,demoted,orfired,asappropriate).Stressmanagementshouldultimatelybetheemployees"responsibility.CON:Employeeswithstressproblemsshouldbeguaranteednottolosetheircurrentpositionswhilethecompanyprovidesorarrangesforspecialtreatmenttoalleviatetheirstressrelatedproblems.Thecorporationhasanobligationtoprovidesignificantassistancetoemployeesintheareaofstressmanagement.EmployeePrivacyPRO:Employeesofanyorganizationshouldbeaccordedsignificantprivacyrightsrelatingtoboththeirtimeandbehavioronthejob,andtheuseoftheirpersonalinformation.Employeeprivacyonthejobshouldberespectedasmuchasitisintheirhomes.CON:Byvirtueofacceptingemploymentinanorganization,employeesmustrelinquishmanyoftheprivacyrightsthattheymightenjoyinpersonalsettings,suchastheirownhome.Theabilityofanorganizationtofunctioneffectivelyandmeetitsgoalsrequiresthislimitationtopersonalprivacyrights.RomanceintheWorkplacePRO:Workplaceromancesareprivatemattersbetweentheindividualsinvolved.Organizationsshouldnottrytoregulatetheminanysignificantway.CON:Workplaceromancescanimpactnegativelyonmoraleandproductivity,andmayresultinchargesofsexualharassment.Organizationshavetherighttoregulatethemastheyseefit.DEBATEBALLOT51
