PublicationVanityFair:ANovelwithoutaHeroisanovelbyWilliamMakepeaceThackeray,firstpublishedin1847–48,satirizingsocietyinearly19th-centuryBritain.Thebook"stitlecomesfromJohnBunyan"sallegoricalstoryThePilgrim"sProgress.Vanityfairreferstoastopalongthepilgrim"sprogress:anever-endingfairheldinatowncalledVanity,whichismeanttorepresentman"ssinfulattachmenttoworldlythings. TheoristsThenovelisasatireofsocietyasawhole,characterizedbyhypocrisyandopportunism,butitisnotareformingnovel;thereisnosuggestionthatsocialorpoliticalchanges,orgreaterpietyandmoralreformismcouldimprovethenatureofsociety.Itthuspaintsafairlybleakviewofthehumancondition.ThisbleakportraitiscontinuedwithThackeray"sownroleasanomniscientnarrator,oneofthewritersbestknownforusingthetechnique.Hecontinuallyoffersasidesabouthischaractersandcomparesthemtoactorsandpuppets,buthisscorngoesevenasfarashisreaders;accusingallwhomaybeinterestedinsuch"VanityFairs"asbeingeither"ofalazy,orabenevolent,orasarcasticmood".
